Recovery & Results
In addition to outstanding results, patients want a safe, comfortable, and uneventful recovery from breast augmentation. In Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona, some websites imply that you can have nearly instantaneous results without more than a day or two of recovery. However, Dr. Robert Cohen, a board-certified plastic surgeon and breast enhancement specialist, takes a more careful and conservative approach for the optimal care of his patients.

Your Recovery & Results from Dr. Cohen
With the rise in popularity of breast augmentation, I have also seen an increase in the misconceptions surrounding this type of surgery - including the idea that breast augmentation is a simple procedure with a minimal recovery process. In reality, although most of my patients tell me that their recovery was much easier than they expected, this procedure still needs to be taken seriously. I explain to my patients that in order to achieve the beautiful, natural looking results that they want from their breast augmentation, it is necessary to take the time to heal properly and to follow postoperative instructions carefully. Rushing back to work or other activities can cause serious risks to your health and to the results that you have worked so hard to achieve.
I recommend that breast augmentation patients take a week off from desk work in order to fully recuperate from their surgery. This period may be longer for patients with physical occupations. During the first 24 hours, you will need someone to drive you home from surgery and keep a close eye on you. You will probably need prescription pain medication for the first several days, gradually reducing them as needed. You should begin short walks around the house on the day of your surgery, getting up at least 5 times a day. This will help with circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots in the legs. I will see you the day after your surgery, and I will advise you as to when your steri-strips will be removed (usually 1 week after surgery) and when you can shower (generally 48 hours after surgery).
You will wear a surgical bra (similar to an adjustable sports bra with a compression strap) for about a week. After that time, you may switch to a soft, non-underwire bra. It is recommended that you sleep in a bra for the first several weeks following surgery in order to promote healing and help your implants to settle into proper position. I recommend that patients avoid underwire bras for the first 4 to 6 months following their breast augmentation surgery.
You will start your routine of breast massage 48 hours after your procedure. I will give you specific instructions on how to perform breast massage at your followup visit the day after surgery. Keep in mind that getting in the habit of regular breast massage can help to reduce the risk of capsular contracture (tightening of scar tissue around the implant).
In terms of physical activity, you must limit lifting and exercise for the first several weeks. Lifting should be limited to less than a pound or two for 2 weeks after surgery, increasing to slightly heavier items in the following weeks, gradually working back up to normal capacity guided by common sense. You want to be careful not to tear any muscles or cause bleeding after your surgery. Exercise should be avoided for the first month after surgery and only light, low impact exercise should be undertaken for 2 more weeks after that. At the 6 week mark, you may use good judgment as you return gradually to unrestricted exercise.
The breasts take a little time to settle into a natural position after breast augmentation. This time frame depends on the size of the implant, the tightness of your skin, and other variables. Swelling and tightened muscles may cause the breasts to appear high and round at first, but breast massage, the compression garment, and time will help them to drop and appear more natural. This process can take several months, although for many of my patients, the breasts look quite natural within a few weeks.
I will take the time to give you much more detailed postoperative instructions when we meet for your final preoperative appointment. I will also be there to guide and assist you in the days and weeks following your surgery. If at any point you have questions, my staff and I are only a phone call away.
