Breast Reduction from Dr. Cohen

I have a genuine passion for all of my work as a plastic surgeon, but I am especially fond of breast reduction procedures. Breast reduction is one of my favorite surgeries, due to the fact that women not only look much better after surgery, but they also have a huge improvement in their physical well-being. Few of us understand the physical and emotional burdens that often accompany very large breasts, such as:

  • Neck, back, and shoulder pain
  • Deep bra strap grooves
  • Rashes and skin irritation
  • Limited physical activity
  • Unwanted attention and teasing
  • Difficulty finding clothing/bras that fit properly

From a cosmetic standpoint, women with very large breasts often look overweight even when they are not as the breasts can overhang into the abdominal region. In many cases, the layers of loose-fitting clothing they feel compelled to wear contribute to this illusion as well. And weight can become an issue for these women, as large, pendulous breasts often prohibit jogging, aerobics, or other forms of exercise. I get an enormous amount of satisfaction in using my breast reduction training and skills to help improve how these women look and feel.

I was fortunate to have trained with two of the world's preeminent breast reduction surgeons at Dartmouth: Dr. Carolyn Kerrigan and Dr. E. Dale Collins. Through my years of training with these accomplished surgeons, I became skilled in updated, scar-minimizing approaches to breast reduction. I also completed a prestigious cosmetic surgery fellowship with renowned Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Grant Stevens. During my fellowship, I studied his innovative laser-assisted breast surgery technique, and we performed over 100 breast reductions using this advanced approach. Furthermore, I published a paper with Dr. Stevens on the safety of laser-assisted breast surgery in the leading plastic surgery journal.

Having a multitude of leading-edge techniques to choose from allows me to truly customize each patient's breast reduction to meet her unique needs and expectations. I take the time to have a frank and open discussion with each patient and listen to her specific ideas about breast size and shape, incision location and areola size. Some women considering breast reduction may also benefit from liposuction to further enhance the contours of the upper body, and this can be incorporated as part of the reduction procedure. I make a professional recommendation based on the woman's anatomy, expectations, and lifestyle, but ultimately we work together to achieve beautiful, natural looking results in conjunction with a healthier, happier patient.
